  Renamed as BSMMU (Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University) is essentially an upgradation of the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR), popularly referred to as PG. The university offers MD, MS, M.Phil, MDS, Diploma and FCPS Courses.

IPGMR was established in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) by the then Government of Pakistan in December 1965, as a Government-controlled postgraduate institute for medical research and studies. It was housed in the now defunct Shahbagh hotel premises, once the prestigious hotel in Dhaka at Shahnagh. From 2010, many of the medical and public health colleges/institutes have come under common affiliation such as BIRDEM, BIHS, DMC, NICVD, NITOR and many others. In different post graduation courses many foreign students are studying.

It was renamed as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by the Act (No. 1, 1998) of Jatiyo Sangshad after the first President of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The university is now autonomous body governed by a 24-member syndicate and comprises 36 Departments under 4 faculties. It has a compact campus with a 1500 bedded hospital. It is is also equipped with a modern academic library as well as a separate digital library.

The Campus has five main multistoried buildings that are identified as Blocks A, B, C, D and Cabin Block.
• Block A (a eight-story building) that accommodates the library, lecture theatre, auditorium, students hostel, dental faculty and blood transfusion services.
• Block B is a six-story building that houses the administrative offices and nursing quarters. It is the original building of Hotel Shahbag.
• Block C comprises a 10-story hospital.
• Block D, a 17-story building, houses several laboratories and emergency units.
• The Cabin Block is dedicated to the casualty department and several other out-patient departments.
New facilities are coming expanding the in existing campus on the north and west.
